How to choose leggings: size, fit and comfort

Black high-waisted CORE leggings worn with white trainers

Leggings can be part of a gentle workout, a walk or an easy everyday outfit. Start with what you actually plan to do in them. Waist height, length and useful details matter just as much as colour. These checks will help you compare styles without relying only on the size letter on the label.

1. Start with the activity and shape

For movement, look at the features stated on the product page and check how freely you can move when trying the leggings on. A close fit alone does not establish compression or suitability for every sport. For everyday outfits, compare fitted and flared legs with the shoes you already wear.

The CORE high-waisted leggings are a starting point for a fitted silhouette. Browse activewear and loungewear to compare shapes and lengths. Choose details that have a purpose in your day, such as pockets or a wider waistband if that feels comfortable to you.

2. Compare the right measurements

Read the size guide for the specific style. Check whether it lists body or garment measurements, as they mean different things. Measure your waist and hips without pulling the tape tight, then compare them with the available guidance. Stretch fabric still needs an appropriate fit.

If you fall between sizes, follow the product’s fit notes instead of automatically sizing down. Ask for clarification if an essential measurement is missing. The fit should feel comfortable when sitting and standing, without pulling at the crotch.

3. Try them on in motion

Walk, sit down and bend your knees. Notice whether the waistband rolls, slips or digs in. Check seams and folds too: a fit that looks right in the mirror can feel different when you move.

Check the fabric in daylight while standing and bending, wearing the underwear you intend to use. A dark colour or a catalogue image cannot guarantee opacity in every position. This check helps you decide whether the pair suits the activity you have in mind.

4. Check length with your shoes

On fitted leggings, look at where the hem meets the ankle and whether excess fabric feels uncomfortable. With flared styles, try on your planned shoes and make sure the hem cannot catch under your foot. Compare a listed length with a similar item you already own.

5. Build an uncomplicated outfit

A loose top contrasts with fitted leggings; a shorter top keeps the waistband visible. Start with a combination you enjoy and add a layer for the weather. Our guide to wearing activewear beyond the gym offers more outfit ideas.

Finally, check the care label. Follow the instructions for that particular garment when washing and drying, rather than assuming every pair of leggings needs the same treatment.
