What shoes go with a midi dress?

Trainers for the day, ballet flats for dinner, boots for cooler weather. Three easy ways to style a midi dress with shoes you already own.

Keep daytime dressing simple

Try a flared midi dress such as ADELE with low-top trainers and a small crossbody bag. The skirt already brings movement, so the shoes can stay understated. Check where the hem falls while wearing your chosen pair. The same dress may sit at mid-calf on one person and much closer to the ankle on another.

Swap shoes for an evening out

Ballet flats with an open topline give a dress a polished feel without adding height. Low heels are another option for dinner. With a black dress, let either the shoes or the bag carry a little colour. Try the whole outfit on, walk around and sit down before deciding which pair works for your plans.

Make room for boots

In cooler weather, knee-high boots that disappear beneath the hem create a continuous line. Prefer ankle boots? Try a close-fitting shaft and check the proportions as you move. A cropped jacket shows the dress's waistline; a long coat follows the length of the skirt. Neither needs to be a rule: choose what feels comfortable to walk in.
